What Cancers can be treated with HIPEC?

Cancer usually starts in one organ and then spreads to the rest of the body through the blood stream or the lymphatic system.  However in some patients with cancer, the tumor spread is contained within the abdominal cavity, also called the peritoneal cavity.  This condition - where cancer deposits are found along the lining of the abdomen - is called carcinomatosis.

Cancers which are often associated with carcinomatosis include:

  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Ovarian Cancer
  • Gastric Cancer
  • Pseudomyxoma Peritonei
  • Mucinous Neoplasm of the Appendix
  • Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Neither surgery nor intravenous chemotherapy alone is very effective for the treatment of carcinomatosis.  However, a combination of surgical debulking followed by the use of heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has been shown to improve the outcome for certain patients with carcinomatosis.
